“We’re very excited to take on this challenge, not only for ourselves but
also to raise funds for summer camp scholarships through the Schindler Fund
and awareness for other Deepwood Foundation programs,” said Kevin Morgan.
“We hope that dozens of local adults with developmental disabilities will be
able to enjoy a canoe ride this summer during camp.”
The Schindler Fund, a vision of Bonnie’s father, Jim Schindler, benefits
local adults with developmental disabilities by providing financial support
for a week-long summer camp experience at Camp Shipshewana in Indiana.
Additionally, the fund provides holiday and birthday gifts for these
individuals.
Father-daughter paddling partners, Kevin and Erin, have been canoeing
together for over 25 years, beginning with short rides in small farm ponds
around their Geauga County home when Erin was a toddler. They hold numerous
competitive accomplishments including first place finishes in the
Madhatter’s/Grand River Canoe Race, Vermillion River Race, Fremont Cup,
Allegheny-Clarion Valley River Classic, and 2009 Ohio State Championships.
The Yukon River Quest, aka “Race to the Midnight Sun,” is a 460-mile
paddling challenge down the Yukon River and through the wilderness from
Whitehorse to Dawson City in Canada’s Yukon Territory. The race will be held
June 30-July 4, 2010. Paddlers literally race around-the-clock, as the sky
never gets dark during the Summer Solstice, with just two mandatory rest
stops for a total of ten hours over the course of the entire event. Paddlers
from nine countries signed up for the 2009 race. |
